EndNote 21

FAQs

Endnote CWYW plug-in is not appearing on Word – On Word, go to File and Options, then select Add-ins and make sure the plug-in is enabled by ticking the box (Windows users). For CWYW plugin troubleshooting on MAC – visit this library guide.

You can also view the below video from Clarivate on using CWYW with Word online.

Importing a pdf file - I cannot import a pdf file to the library from my desktop. An alternative is to try drag and drop the file. If this does not work, find the article on an appropriate database (you can use the DOI to do this) and export the citation to Endnote as normal from that database.

How can I back-up an Endnote library? You can use Endnote Online as a back-up, making sure to synch the desktop version regularly. You can also download a compressed library (see next entry).

Sharing files online

How can I share an Endnote library on Endnote Online? On EndNote 21 you can share your library with up to 1000 others - granting simultaneous access to your entire library including references, PDFs and annotations to PDFs. For sharing you and any others with whom you want to share your library must all have an EndNote Online account.

Log into your Endnote Online account.

Click on the File menu then select Share.

Enter the email addresses of the people with whom you would like to share your library. Select whether to give them Read & Write access or Read Only access. Click Invite.

Downloading an Endnote compressed library – On Endnote, go to File > Compressed Library (enlx.) … and this will download a copy of the library to your desktop, allowing you to have a back-up file, share the library via email or OneDrive, or import it to a separate library you have etc.

Word asks me to log into my Endnote account - Clicking the EndNote tab in MS Word desktop produces a request to login to EndNote account – you need to sync Word to Endnote desktop rather than Endnote Online  (see Preferences below)

  • Within Word click on the EndNote 21 tab and then Preferences.
