What is an Institutional Repository (IR)?

Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland

An institutional repository (IR) is an open access digital archive of all the scholarly activity, publications, and research related to that institute. An IR can preserve content and also increase research visibility and collaboration. Explore the IRs on this page and reach out to the library at RCSI with any questions. The library is proud to manage and promote the open access institutional repository at RCSI.

What are the benefits of an institutional repository?

Collation - Scholarly content is diverse (books, theses, research papers, reports, departmental guidelines, etc.) and having a single place to store and access everything is a major advantage.

Preservation - Preserving scholarly work gets much easier with an online open-access institutional repository.

Visibility -  Anyone interested in viewing this material can freely access and view it online.

Leadership - When an institution’s research content is accessed widely, you can expect more people to cite, share, link, and discuss it. The institute itself gains more traction.
