Scan and Send

Scan & Send is a free electronic document delivery service provided by RCSI Library to RCSI staff and students and others registered to the institution such as honorary lecturers, clinical tutors and adjunct staff.

Submit your request here and we will scan a book chapter or journal article from our print collections, and deliver it to your RCSI email address. Materials provided are for personal use only and should not be shared or redistributed.

All scans provided will be compliant with the ICLA Higher Education Licence limits for copying and distribution.

Who can use the Scan & Send service?

The service is available to all RCSI Staff and Students.

Before you submit a request

Please check

  • Primo VE Search to see if books of interest are available in the library or online
  • Journal Search for electronic journals, as we may have online access to the journal/article of interest.

If RCSI Library does not have access to the item of interest, please use the document supply service.

If RCSI Library has no online access, but does have print copies of the item of interest, please submit a Scan & Send request.

How many requests can I submit?

You may place as many requests as you wish at the one time, but the Scan & Send service reserves the right to process one request per person per day, depending on the overall request volume. 

What can be requested?

You can request scans of books chapters and journal articles from print items in the modern collections held in RCSI Library York Street. We cannot provide scanned copies of materials held in the Mercer Store or Heritage Collections or RCSI Library, Beaumont Hospital. Every effort will be made to meet your request but this may not always be possible in light of availability and the limits imposed by the ICLA Higher Education Licence.

When the requestor submits the Scan & Send request they are agreeing to the terms of use of this service.

Scan & Send – Terms of use

When the requestor submits the Scan & Send request they are agreeing to the following conditions and terms of use:

  • the material is provided for the purpose of research, for a non-commercial purpose or for private study
  • that they have not previously been supplied with a copy of the same material by RCSI library or any other library
  • that they will not supply a copy of it, by any means to another person
  • that only a single paper copy will be retained and the electronic copy will be destroyed if the item is printed
  • That if the declaration is false in a material particular the copy supplied will be an infringing copy and the requester will be liable for the infringement as if they made it themselves.​

All scans provided will be compliant with the ICLA Higher Education Licence limits for copying and distribution:

  • Scans can only be provided of materials in the ownership of RCSI.
  • No more than one chapter or 10% of book, whichever is greater can be provided
  • No more than one article from a journal issue can be provided
